Location: London (hybrid)

Salary: £45k - £54k

JOB PURPOSE: Commissioning Editor

The Commissioning Editor is responsible for finding and contracting new books and new editions and working with authors to deliver a frontlist of titles in a designated subject or subdiscipline. The role involves building relationships and working closely with authors, making decisions that impact positively on product development and profitability, and collaborating effectively with internal colleagues to achieve project goals and strategic objectives. The role may also include managing an Assistant.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: Commissioning Editor

  • Commissions new titles and new editions from an agreed hitlist to create a pipeline of future publishing;
  • Transmits manuscripts to achieve frontlist budget;
  • Contributes to list strategy formation and hitlisting;
  • Builds relationships and works closely with authors to ensure under contract projects remain on schedule and are delivered to plan;
  • Proposes and monitors costs and agrees pricing on each title to achieve profitability within agreed thresholds;
  • Develops market knowledge through campus-calling and desk-based research to inform our publishing and strategic plans;
  • Represents the company at conferences and author meetings to maintain a positive impression of the Brand;
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues across functions to ensure work is efficient and effective;
  • Manages or delegates effectively to an Assistant to ensure they provide strong administrative support and are responsive to authors and colleagues across functions.


  • Graduate in any subject.
  • Good knowledge of the academic books market.
  • Good knowledge of the key functions and processes within academic publishing.
  • Commercial acumen.
  • Ability to communicate and influence effectively.
  • Ability to manage workload.
  • Ability to plan and carry out effective research to build market knowledge.
  • Ability to analyse market knowledge and feedback and apply it to shape book projects and strategic commissioning plans.
  • Proficient in all standard IT packages (email, word-processing, spreadsheets).
